Within the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen (RUG) and the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), the Department of Neuroscience is one of the main teaching departments. Currently, the department has 18 staff members with full-time or part-time teaching appointments, annually serving more than 2,500 students and professionals in various graduate, post-graduate, and post-academic programmes within and also outside the RUG/UMCG confines.
Next to a wide array of teaching methods and active involvement in the development of e-learning tools and platforms, the available teaching courses include a variety of disciplines as diverse as biophysics, radiology, clinical anatomy, embryology, neuroscience, medical physiology and immunology. An increasing proportion of courses is also taught in English; the department participates in the European Medical School Groningen–Oldenburg, a German medical curriculum taught in English. A department member is the current Best Teacher in Medicine, the current holder of the UMCG Education & Training Fellowship, and has four principal educators appointed by the Dean of Education – more than any department!
