  • Gert J. Ter Horst completed his PhD cum laude in Groningen, in 1986. Subsequently, he was a product manager for psychotropic drugs at Jansen Pharmaceuticals (Tilburg) and returned to the University of Groningen in 1988, to set up a neuroanatomical research group in the Department of Oral Biology.

    In 1991, he moved to the Department of Psychiatry, focusing his research programme on function and dysfunction of the limbic system.

    In 2003, he became Director of the Neuroimaging Centre (NiC). In 2011, he received a grant from the Top Institute Food and Nutrition (TIFN, Wageningen) on ‘Long-term liking’ and since then he has been Project Leader of the Sensory and Liking Programme in collaboration with the industrial partners Danone and Friesland Campina; the project focuses on mechanisms of food-related reward in patients, elderly and healthy volunteers. In 2015, after the completion of the TIFN project he was appointed as bachelor coordinator G2020. His current research focuses on gender differences and molecular neurobiological effects of chronic stress exposure.

    He is member of the board of the Dutch Neurofederation, member of the Endo-Neuro-Psycho meeting organisation committee, and chairman of the fifth Endo-Neuro-Psycho meeting organisation committee. Prof. Ter Horst is a member of the ZonMW VICI committee and of the University Science Committee (UCW), and competency coordinator for academic development in the UMCG medical programme.

    He edited the books Clinical Pharmacology of Cerebral Ischemia, The Nervous System and the Heart and Current and Future Developments in Psychopharmacology, and is an author of approximately 130 papers.
